Despite garbage-eating unicorns and an endearing Chris Pratt, Onward lacks that Pixar magic. Read our full review:

, isn’t an orphan in the strictest sense. He has a mom, Laurel But a mother’s love has its work cut out for it if it’s competing with a child’s insurmountable grief. It doesn’t help that mom is seeing a new dude. Ian’s older brother, Barley , is also the Dungeons & Dragons, live-at-home type. This would make him an additionally depressing presence in Ian’s life, excepttakes place in a world where there are actually dungeons and dragons.

Actually, no: they're moody, fatherless boys suffering a bad case of suburbia. But they have elf ears and go to school with ogres and trolls. Theirs is a suburbia full of fire-breathing pets and fairy tale puns, and also magic.shouldn’t be described in too much detail, but the crux of it is fair to mention: on his 16th birthday, Ian gets a mysterious gift from his father. It is, in effect, a chance to see him again, and it will be gone in 24 hours.

The things you’d expect—want—to happen in a movie like this, all the ironing out of personal differences, all the unexpected shows of bravery from our boy heroes, indeed come to pass.would be your standard, family-friendly Hero’s Journey reissue but for the fact of its excitable voice acting , its genuine sentiment, and a surplus of those too-clever amalgamations of reality and myth that elevate Pixar’s style.

It’s still a fine movie. And secretly, it’s maybe even an extremely dark one; it’s fun to ponder. Peel back the layers of cosmic goodwill and Manticore hugs, and Ian and Barley’s endeavor starts to look a little cruel, like some Herculean challenge out of a noirish alien ransom movie:A mythological gangster-creature with a James Cagney swagger terrorizing Pixar dweebs—now there’s a mess. And a sequel I’d gladly see.
