Artist Shellie Zhang is in residence at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego in Encinitas and Lei Liang is a music professor at UC San Diego

Two San Diego groups, Art of Elan and the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego, continued their fine work on Friday in a joint event at ICA North in Encinitas.

ICA North was a perfect setting for Art of Elan’s performance. The complex features several gallery spaces that flow easily into a multilevel outdoor courtyard that spreads invitingly beneath trees and lights, encouraging visitors and their attentions to move freely through both art and music.

Violinist Kate Hatmaker and the cellist Alex Greenbaum gave a detailed and rich account of Liang’s “Gobi Canticle.” This expansive piece features the two players in multiple roles and sonic textures that include grinding ponticello drones, mercurial melodic filigrees, and virtuosic, improvised-sounding solo caprices. Kudos go to both players who kept fingers nimble and active outdoors in the nighttime chill.

Greenbaum is a member of the Hausmann Quartet, and was joined for the final two works by violinists Isaac Allen and Bram Goldstein and violist Angela Choong.
