Folk and blues guitarist “Spider” John Koerner, who is best known for mentoring singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, died Saturday at the age of 85.“‘Spider’ John Koerner passed away at 2:35 a.m. this morning,” he wrote. “My brother Matt Koerner, his grandkid EJ Kalmbach and I were at his side. The music world lost a great artist, and we lost Grandpa John.”
“He was an immensely talented musician, whom David Bowie, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and countless others credited as an influence,” Kalmbach continued. “He was dad to Matt Koerner, Mia Koerner and me. Grandpa to Nick, William, Charlie, Theo and EJ.”“Being the guy he is, he only met life on his own terms.
Koerner was an engineering student at the University of Minnesota when he first started playing the guitar. He quickly became a fixture on the folk and blues circuit of the 1960s, performing with artists like Dave Ray, Tony Glover, and Willie Murphy, according toWhen Bob Dylan came to Minneapolis very early in his career, Koerner was the first musician he met and the two would perform together in coffee houses, MPRNews said.
Koerner released seven albums that influenced a number of artists, including David Bowie and Bonnie Raitt. Raitt covered his song, “I Ain’t Blue,” on her debut album“I’ve had a lot of things which were impressive,” Koerner said in a 2017 interview. “The Newport Folk Festivals, to me was really something.
