Abby McCloskey answers reader comments and objections to her earlier column about controlling smartphones in schools.

A ninth grader places her cellphone in to a phone holder as she enters class at Delta High School, Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, in Delta, Utah. Most schools have policies regulating student cellphone use at school. But the reality is kids don’t always follow the rules and schools enforce them sporadically.I am an applied economist and the mother of three young children.

This generation wants to learn on devices. You wouldn’t believe it, they can make powerpoint slides on their smartphones! 2. The smartphone is not a calculator with a singular function. Apps and updates can never be fully shut off, and this directly compromises students’ learning and attention.
