MTV News: Growing up in South Africa and later moving to the United States, what was your relationship with Aretha Franklin as an icon, as a musician?I come from a culture and a family that listened to music all the time. I don't really know of a time when I didn't know about Aretha Franklin's music. As soon as I was conscious, I heard it playing. And I became obsessed with her at a very, very young age.
And then there were other people on set who had to sing, the women who played the backup singers, the woman who played her mother, Audra McDonald, Heather Headley. These are all Tony-winning, Tony-nominated actresses and singers. Tituss Burgess, everybody who had to sing is at the top of their game vocally. And I just think it brought power and an intensity to the musical performances the way that maybe lip-syncing or something that was done in a studio wouldn't.
