Community members wore school specific merchandise while speaking on behalf of their schoolsPublished: Feb. 23, 2024 at 4:18 PM AKSTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - Tuesday, Feb. 20, marked the second school board meeting of the month. Between the first and second meeting, awas released resulting in a large gathering of residents during Tuesday night’s meeting.
Among the long list of residents providing public comment, students and parents spoke to their experiences at Pearl Creek Elementary School, Ticasuk Brown Elementary School, Ben Eielson Jr./Sr. High School and Two Rivers Elementary School. Students more specifically speaking to the opportunities they’ve had and those that they may lose by changing schools. Parents meanwhile speaking about the quality of the education, relationships and dedication of the staff at each school.
Catherin Pusch, Principal of Ticasuk Brown Elementary School also spoke to the unique situation of her own school. “Ticasuk Brown is a title one school; many of our families struggle,” she said. “Over 50 percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.” Pusch highlighted other hardships these families face and how transferring students to other schools would create more issues such as transportation and accessing locations such as Arctic Lights Elementary School on Ft. Wainwright.
