The icebreaker Polarstern set out from Norway last September and is due back in port in Germany in October. The expedition MOSAiCArctic is collecting data in the Arctic Ocean to better understand the loss of polar ice and climate change. | hereandnow

The vessel is currently “pretty close to the North Pole” near the Siberian coast, says professor Markus Rex, head of atmospheric physics at the Alfred Wegener Institute and leader of the Arctic expeditionPolar bear mom and cub close to Polarstern and Akademik Fedorov. Oct. 3, 2019.

It’s also impossible to reach the Arctic in the winter, Rex says, so the vessel went there in the fall and anchored itself to an ice floe. While some might find it depressing to live under the cover of darkness for a year, Rex says he and many members of the MOSAiC expedition have found the experience “inspiring.”

Formosa? Taiwan is the Republic of China, and it is the legitimate government of China in my eyes. Though the communists might control the mainland, the R.o.C. still is the legitimate government of China, even if all it physically controls is the island of Taiwan. Taiwan🇹🇼 has been a country since 1912. It's still known as Republic of China formally and informally as TAIWAN. A chunk of ROC's territory is illegally occupied by secessionists called the CCP and illegally declared independence as 🇨🇳PRC in 1949.
