Strokkur in Iceland's Haukadalur valley is one of the world's most active geysers, erupting like clockwork every 10 minutes or so, sending plumes of steaming hot water up to 65 feet into the air. Like other geysers, Strokkur is propelled by underground magma, an intense heat source close to the Earth's surface.
“If you fly to Europe and back it will take this unit about a week to offset your emissions,” Helgason adds. As people across the globe begin to take the climate crisis more seriously, Magnason speculates about what coming years will look like. “So in the future you will have capturing equipment on chimneys of the world and gas ships sailing to harbors where it will be pumped down with maybe seawater."
It's also not reactive. But basalt rock contains metals that are needed to react with the C02 and turn it into stone. To facilitate the process, she explains, Carbfix infuses the CO2 with water, killing the gas' buoyancy. Then, she says,"it sinks instead of rising up." Magnason reiterates that the problem here isn't that it doesn't work — it does! It's that more emissions are needed to thwart worldwide temperature increases.
hereandnow How much energy is needed per ton of CO2?
hereandnow Wow, just wow. 'It's a biblical image — researchers are taking one of the most dangerous drivers of climate change and turning it into stone.'
hereandnow How much energy does it take?
hereandnow Fake news at it's best. With libs there's always a crisis around the corner, but tell them Jesus is coming in judgment and they close their ears, sigh.
Neutron_Frog hereandnow Make seawalls out of it?
hereandnow cool idea could we use it to build affordable housing maybe?
hereandnow Diatoms R us
hereandnow All over the world, plants are taking carbon dioxide and turning it into wood and leaves.
hereandnow ⬆️↗️↖️⬆️This is worth a shot, at least. Right?
hereandnow Sure until Exxon decides it'll make a nice cheap fuel to burn
hereandnow
hereandnow Old news
hereandnow The human spirit.......adapt, overcome, survive! Not complaining and blaming.........
hereandnow And here in the US we just argue and deny it’s happening.
hereandnow If only there was a carbon dioxide breathing flora🤔. Oh wait they live all around us if you dont live in a concrete jungle... Wast of capital
hereandnow And another thing, while npr was covering climate change in Iceland you neglected to report the violent snow hurricane that just buried them. Look it up.
hereandnow 0.004% of earth's atmosphere does not make co2 'one of the most important drivers of climate change'. The sun however is solarminimum magneticreversal
hereandnow Getting Rid of CO2 will Kill the Planet Faster than any of your Fairy Tale Climate Change! CO2=LIFE!
hereandnow This is what free college yields. The brightest rise. In america, the rich rise. VoteBlueToSaveAmerica ewarren
hereandnow Great, then we can burn it.
hereandnow Faux news at it's finest. There is no global climate crisis!
hereandnow What a total waste of time and resource. Absolutely no practical means of implementing this. 🙄
hereandnow Well u can be damn sure nothing will get done in the US, seems like every innovation disappears as soon as it's reported on
hereandnow Aaaa so cool!
hereandnow This technology should be called “Medea”.
hereandnow These lunatics want to freeze us all to death by sucking the CO2 out of the atmosphere.
hereandnow KISS proposed this years ago and were laughed out of the summit.
hereandnow And how much carbon is created to turn the carbon to Stone? Do I have to read this? No, leave it alone.
hereandnow Only problem , plants need co2
hereandnow the question remains. Does it take more energy to mine/crush the peridotite than someone got in burning the coal? Coal remains the ideal form in which to sequester carbon for geologically-relevant periods.
hereandnow There goes all our plants food
hereandnow Wish I could understand all this!!!
hereandnow Sounds good, but how much energy is needed for this process? Do they exceed what renewable can offer?
hereandnow No it will not solve the climate “crisis” because there is no crisis.
hereandnow Trees capture CO2 to make sugar and oxygen and it’s free.
hereandnow Icelandic ingenuity will save us all
hereandnow Have they tried trees! I heard they do this really well
hereandnow Good science.
hereandnow There is no global climate crisis.
hereandnow Thnx npr! See all our iceland stories ( glaciers!! Most fascinating environmentalist in recent memory andri Magnusson!) at Scroll down to coveringclimate
hereandnow The quantity of rock required to sequester CO2 is mind-boggling. Just because this is chemically possible and Iceland is full of this basalt does not mean it is a viable solution. And the basalt needs to be crushed to work well.
hereandnow Two words: energy balance. Most of these scenes function, but require large amounts of energy. How are you going to generate that energy? If there is a carbon free method, why not just use it in lieu of fossil fuel.
hereandnow Storing carbon in rock. And what happens when the rock disintegrates? Does it release all the stored CO2. Isn’t this just a another stop-gap measure?
hereandnow I’m no scientist, but this is cool! Cool as in cool down the Earth!
hereandnow Not by itself. We need to cut back our dependency on fossil fuels for energy.
hereandnow What’s left for Greta to do then. She quit school to lecture us for a paycheck!
hereandnow GretaThunberg
hereandnow What do trees and plants absorb to create Oxygen?
hereandnow Iceland making THE WORLD great again
hereandnow Or use it for feed in algae farms, algae that can produce biofuels.
hereandnow Who has any proof that CO2 drives any change to the climate. The money would be better spent finding water in Africa.
hereandnow This is fighting fire with fire- over industrialization with more industry. The carbon cycle works pretty well without human intervention already. I deeply believe in organic methods of recycling and shifting to sustainable energy, not trying to fix dirty fossil fuel consumption
hereandnow Good to see alternatives to anti-modernity solutions are being developed.
hereandnow This is an unscientific lie and hoax. It's all about power, greed, tyranny. Using scare tactics not based on any truth to commit economic tyranny via Socialism. You can't get it one way so you try another. There's no C02 problem. C02 doesn't drive climate, the climate drives C02.
hereandnow How much water does this cost? Not talking too much about it, eh?
hereandnow
hereandnow That’s nice. Why don’t they go to China and India and stop them from polluting so much?
hereandnow Water Vapour from the Oceans is the major green house gas. Also if they want to help maybe they should turn Termites into stone.
hereandnow 'potential solution' ... ... does it mean we should continue with OUR DELUSIONAL APATHY?
hereandnow Does it look nice as a countertop? If so they could really be on to something.
