Researchers at Case have been working for four years to develop the next generation of electrolytes that can render utility-size battery systems less costly, more efficient and more safe.

Peter Krouse, cleveland.com

To that end, researchers at Case have been working for four years to develop the next generation of electrolytes that can render utility-size battery systems less costly, more efficient and more safe. The batteries operate kind of like a fuel cell, he said, which takes gases that flow through a stack of electrodes and converts those gases into electricity.

The plan is to come up with low-cost, high performing electrolytes that are also safer because they are based instead on strong hydrogen-bonding networks and “microemulsions” that are basically a mixture of oil and water, Savinell said.
