Archbishop Desmond Tutu, best known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist, was laid to rest Saturday in Cape Town, South Africa.

“When we were in the dark, he brought light,” Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the head of the worldwide Anglican church, said in a video message shown at a requiem Mass celebrated for Tutu at St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town.

Tutu died last Sunday at age 90. His small plain pine coffin, the cheapest available at his request to avoid any ostentatious displays, was the center of the service, which also is featuring African choirs, prayers and incense. A few hundred people braved stormy weather to watch the service on a large screen in front of Cape Town City Hall. The municipal government building is where Tutu held hands aloft with Nelson Mandela on the day in 1990 when Mandela was released after serving 27 years in prison because of his opposition to apartheid.

“Our partnership struck a chord, perhaps, in the hearts and minds of many people: a dynamic Black leader and his white deputy in the dying years of apartheid,” Nuttall continued."And hey, presto, the heavens did not collapse. We were a foretaste, if you like, of what could be in our wayward, divided nation.”

South Africa bids farewell to anti-apartheid hero Desmond TutuLife-size posters of Tutu, with his hands clasped, are placed outside the St George's Cathedral in Cape Town, where the number of congregants is restricted in line with Covid-19 measures. If near Qiyamah you see the real Islam spreading from the land before Khurasan, then join even if you have to crawl with naked feet over the mountains to get there. A blessed dream of Muhammad Qasim. I think he is the Imam Al-Mahdi.

Requiem praise for South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu | AP News'When we were in the dark, he brought light.” A funeral service is underway in South Africa for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. A plain pine coffin, the cheapest available at his request to avoid ostentatious displays, is at the center of the service. Rest In Peace TutuLegacy. Notice that a mask mandate is still in effect in SA. Great man. Huge loss. But if he figured a pine box would deal with the 'ostentatious' problem, he was wrong. It's all theatre. Pine box included. And the costumes look ridiculous. Nobody does theatre better than organized religion.
