Is a $600 unemployment boost a disincentive to work? Here's what experts say. investinyou (In partnership with acorns.)

Other research shows some evidence of a decline in job applications linked to the $600 unemployment benefit, but not enough to make up for there being "very few jobs out there," said Ioana Marinescu, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania and one of the study's co-authors.

Job vacancies decreased by 64% during the pandemic, while job applications only decreased by 21%, according to the, published July 30 by Marinescu and economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Glassdoor, a jobs and career site. As a result, the number of applications per job increased during the downturn, meaning businesses had a larger pool of workers from which to choose — a kind of "rate race" for jobs, the research found.A decline in job applications tied to the $600 unemployment benefit might be actually good for social welfare by reducing excess competition for jobs, Marinescu said.

"It's actually kind of correct" when Republican lawmakers say increased unemployment generosity decreases work-search efforts, she added. "But it doesn't matter in the current state of the labor market," Marinescu said. "It's focusing on the wrong thing.Of course, this isn't to say that zero businesses have reported recruitment difficulty or that no unemployed people have stayed on the sidelines as a result of generous benefits.

These studies look at employment in the aggregate. So, on the whole, the U.S. economy isn't worse off because of the $600-a-week benefits.

acorns Ask any entrepreneur. It 1000% is.

acorns Owning a mid size business that pays a very good wage, we are having problems hiring plus there’s a high unemployment rate in our area. Full benefits available also. So, yes it’s a problem. therealworld

acorns Absolutely an incentive to not work. $1000 per week to sit on your ass and watch TV or strenuous or thought-provoking work at the same price. Hmmmmm....doesn’t take a genius! Expert must not = genius!

acorns I have a bunch of tenets not working because they are collecting unemployment.

acorns Yeah I’m thinking of quitting my job and sitting on my ass and collecting unemployment why participate in the communist America if the communist America is going to pay you to sit on your ass instead...

acorns You have no ide what it’s like! 😡

acorns Depends on what you were previously making. Some are still underpaid and some are over paid.

acorns In Europe we dont have such problems. You dpnt need to go into a pandemic to get a a 1000 euros unemployment boost

acorns I don’t care what “experts” say. Tell them to come see me, I will prove you them it is.

acorns It is bc I (and friends) know ppl who laugh and joke about not going back to work and think this will last for a long time

acorns What experts Is this like “in-Named” sources. Our media and press has been bought out by China and Russia. America wake up and save our country from being bought by Socialists/Democrats

acorns Thank god he passed something might have to vote republican this year. gotsomethingdone

acorns Yes.

acorns Was the bank bailout in 08-09 a disincentive to run the business properly?

acorns I've spent my time restructuring my life. Took some classes, learned new skills, made big changes. Making it worth while, this has helped ppl take the time to make wiser choices for themselves. It's an incentive to choose something where u'll THRIVE, not just survive!

acorns Or we could reopen businesses and just not be filthy animals. The hacks at CNBC are clueless. LiberalismIsAMentalDisorder

acorns - $600 is incentive for 30 million people to be evicted and become homeless 🤪🤷🏻‍♂️💀

acorns Long, meandering attempt to justify paying 2/3rds of people laid off more than they were making when they were working. It obviously is a disincentive to find another job. What could conceivably justify paying people more not to work than to work?

acorns I had the $600, but I still didn't make as much as my wages and I was eager to go back to work. It helped a lot. I didn't get behind in any bills. No golden toilets. No extravagance. Just a little peace of mind.

acorns

acorns Another biased political hit piece. Absolute crap.

acorns It may be for some people and this was probably more true 20 years ago, but I doubt many Americans today receiving $600 think they can suddenly retire.

acorns This stereotype of the lazy minority comes from wealthy people and politicians who really don’t care about anyone but themselves. People deserve to eat live and survive regardless if you don’t think they deserve to.

acorns Absolutely. Seen it first hand.

acorns we’re talking about ubi. This has been a forced test. It has worked fantastic under any measure. The question is not does UBI work the question is does the trillions dumped into the stock market make sense? One helps millions and props up the economy the other helps billionaires

acorns The only experts in this are the people who are making for more on unemployment then they were at their jobs. And I can assure you that the ones who turned down going back to their jobs aren't talking

acorns It is not.

acorns Yes of course it is, especially when jobs are open!!

acorns “Experts”

acorns Who the hell are experts in such common sense? Of course it’s disincentive to work. I know plenty of people who been traveling on their checks and hope they can continue to do so if they come back.

acorns No. Most Americans prefer working

acorns It’s 50/50

acorns Why is our government concerned about making jobless Citizens lazy. They should focus on retrieving the trillions they have gifted the Fangs.

acorns Unemployment should be limited to around 80% of original pay. 60% of people on unemployment were making more to do nothing. That was wrong. Many unemployed were making for than enlisted military and first responders

acorns 2 some it is... 2 most it's not.

acorns Yes. Anyone saying the opposite is just partisan.

acorns For many being stuck at home for months at a time with the spouse and children is a nightmare.

acorns IS 6 Trillion in corporate bailouts a disincentive to run a business properly? Turns out yes.

acorns The president is about to stick it to the democrats and win voters who are taking advantage of this disincentive

acorns Of course it is. But in the mist of a pandemic is the right thing to do.

acorns No stop promoting ridiculous Republican talking points. Are billion dollar bailouts to friends a disincentive to stop stealing from taxpayers? No.

acorns KyleKulinski kenklippenstein JordanUhl drmistercody are you kidding me...

acorns It is

acorns Yes it does makes them not want to work.

acorns Yes it is

acorns I know for a fact it is for some people.

acorns My neighbor, who works at a premium national retailer, informed me that additional unemployment benefits are a definite disincentive for bringing employees back.

acorns I thought if you refuse to go back to work, ALL unemployment stops. Thats how it should work.

acorns $BYFC huge news in relation to it OVERSOLD. About to run premarket fellas. Largest black owned bank in the west coast. I alerted it from 1.48 to 4.80 already and from 1.85 to 3.80s. People haven't seen news yesterday wave coming here. AT BOTTOM FOLKS📈💸

acorns Most of those people will be happy to go back to work after November

acorns Experts? Just ask anyone with common sense..... yes being paid $15/hr extra ontop of unemployment to not work is an incentive to not work.

acorns NWKMF this is a really good read on the validity of the $600 and it’s net positive on total jobs (of course there will always be some that don’t return to work) but ultimately it boosts the economy and adds far more jobs. Additionally, there are far more candidates than openings

acorns $ 2500 per month Free MONEY. if one can make such FREE MONEY, why work ? Logical ?

acorns If it was fall and deer hunting season I would definitely take 600$ a week to take work off

acorns Don't care what the 'experts' say. I know first hand how the $600/wk unemployment boost saves families. NOTHING the GOP or experts can say to change my mind. How can an unemployed person be given a dis-incentive to work if there are NO JOBS to go to?

acorns Your deceptive,it’s $600 plus unemployment-many are making more not working it’s a perverse incentive

acorns Welcome to Venezuela.

acorns 'Americans receiving the subsidy are pumping money into the economy and supporting jobs, according to a number of economists.'

acorns If you're at high risk of COVID and also getting $600 a week Definitely.
