in the Oval Office of the White House, on December. 19, 2019.: New Jersey Representative Jeff Van Drew—a former Democratic congressman who joined the Republican party last week after breaking with Democrats on impeachment—toldon Sunday that he decided to switch parties when a New Jersey county chair told him he had to vote in favor of impeachment or risk losing reelection.
In his first interview since officially switching parties last week, Van Drew said he had been thinking about the move for a while, but the “final sign” came when a New Jersey county chair told him he had to vote for impeachment or “you’re not going to be able to run in my county.
“It all boils down to one vote, that I may have my own individual opinion on one vote, and that is not going to be allowed? I’m going to be punished for that? And that’s when I knew," he continued.
