Rep. Jamaal Bowman hit with misdemeanor charge for pulling fire alarm as House debated spending votea firestorm he kicked up Sept. 30
The charge of raising a false fire alarm comes with a maximum sentence of six months in prison under DC law, as well as a fine of up to $1,000. Under the deal, Bowman acknowledged that he “willfully and knowingly” gave a “false alarm of a fire,” in violation of District law.The outspoken socialist testified that “he did not tell anyone” about the snafu until the House “Sergeant at Arms contacted him” and denied that he “intended to cause a fire alarm,” per an affidavit.
Democrats were given a copy of the spending patch Republicans crafted just before the vote was set to take place. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries used his so-called “magic minute” speaking authority to buy time so his party could comb through the legislation for any poison pills.
