Higher fossil energy prices and concerns about energy supply disruptions are driving the acceleration of wind, solar and other renewables, the International Energy Agency says

The global energy crisis sparked by Russia’s war in Ukraine has “sparked unprecedented momentum” for renewable energy, according to a report Tuesday from the International Energy Agency.

The shift “is a clear example of how the current energy crisis can be a historic turning point towards a cleaner and more secure energy system,” said Fatih Birol, executive director at IEA, in a statement. “Even if fossil energy prices were to fall, Europe would remain exposed to a need for import, paired with price volatility. Europe will therefore continue to have a structural interest to electrify and increase its reliance on domestically produced renewable energy,” Cazzola said in an email.

Solar remains the most economic option for new electricity generation in most of the world, according to the report. Solar alone makes up over 60 percent of the projected expansion of renewable energy capacity annually over the next five years, and is expected to outpace coal in terms of installations by 2027, IEA said.

The world could speed up renewables’ growth further by taking steps to expand grid infrastructure, addressing policy uncertainty, and permitting challenges and securing financing for projects in developing countries, the report said.

According to SciAm, 'Renewables will overtake coal as the world’s largest electricity source by 2025' That claim depends on defining 'renewable' to include the burning of trees. The enviro favorites, wind and solar, are now and will likely always be negligible.

If we tranform the graph in $ per terawatt hours, the comparison get a lot worse for the two sources (solar+wind). to further worsen the comparison, we should add to solar & wind four-five decades of very massive subsidies (all paid by us in the electricity bill!).

Yes. The party of hate raised fuel prices to punish the poor and you fat cats are rejoicing. Typical.

I believe it is right to position solar & wind energy production in comparison to all other fossil, hydro and nuclear energy production worldwide. See this in the following picture: is it realistic to state that solar & wind will replace in the next decade all other sources

Meaning: Forced closure of reliable for mandated and subsidized unreliables is causing rapid expansion of the latter. Enjoy your blackouts, people.

Fake news. Government subsidies are the only driver!

Solar power will beat out coal globally in 3 years: International Energy AgencyIn just three years' time, the world will get more power from wind and solar sources than from coal, according to the International Energy Agency. Good news. Just don't bankrupt us first. By increasing alternative sources or destroying coal sources? We will have daytime solar power when the son shines - which is less than 50% of the time. So for the other 50% plus times, will we use coal or do without?
