The Bay Area’s highly paid tech workers are giving up on San Francisco. In this new era of remote work, some are moving to places where the homes are cheaper and the taxes lower. “I’ll live like a king.”

For years there’s been talk of a potential exodus from the San Francisco Bay Area, spurred by the exorbitant cost of living and long, slogging commutes. But before coronavirus, leaving the area meant walking away from some of the best-paying and most prestigious jobs in America.

There are signs the exodus is finally happening. Silicon Valley, America’s signature hub of innovation, may never be the same.

SF - Just don't step in the poop!

Please don’t bring your shit city disease to Texas. WE ARE CONSERVATIVE

I think it may be just beginning, again

Techies can **** themselves

Democrats have ruined the state. It’s always the same. The exodus is on.

As a 30-year San Franciscan, I can get behind this. SF used to be a quirky city where one could live without being a hedge fund manager or a trust fund baby.

Great!

More apartments for the homeless

San Francisco was over when tech moved in, now it might gain character again.

Hippies to yuppies to whatever’s slang for millennials the city is special

No it will hopefully get to be made up of a more diverse non-tech population!! This is what a special city like SF needed! It was a soulless pit of greed for the last ten years.

San Francisco Bay Area is defined by cycles of 10-20 years. Winding down of current cycle is a returning to normalcy - until the next technology cycle begins.

It's OVER

Why not make it into city sized homeless/immigrant center. California could ship folks in from around the state. No police of course but a social worker department could deal with any issues. California could provide housing, food, medical care. Seems like a win win.

nyc is sinking fast...seattle and portland, next up. why stay in overpriced, high crime, no leadership, etc...and if you do, more crime for u with taxes out your arse

Wherever these Bay Area workers go they'll bring their political leanings with them. If this is truly an 'exodus' and not just a short term bust, they'll turn communities or entire states more blue.

Toffler was right

Just hope these people dont take their same votes when they move out of California !

Yawn. Bay Area is boom and bust. It will be back.

Can we all finally agree that liberal democrat policy has failed?

Streets sure looks bad, it’s disappointing to see this living here.

😱😱😱

That's what they said in 1906. Ha. It's the location of world class universities and incredible weather/beauty, so there will always be a thriving business climate.

Possible eventual, by the Covid19.

Actually a more realistic land value would be great so we could go back to where average people could live there. It would improve the city atmosphere too.

Bye!

The death of S.F. is greatly exaggerated. Every few years the city completely reinvents itself.

communism destroyed San Francisco

Global nomads remotework

Well by this WSJ headline soon there will be no more San' Francisco

When you realize your entire net worth is tied to a studio loft with no yard space or parking that was previously valued solely on being located in a “lifestyle destination” for a lifestyle that no longer exists.

“May never be the same.” And that’s a problem how?

San Francisco is a bellwether for the mass exodus out of Californistan.

Good. San Francisco/Bay Area proved a thousand times in the past 20 years it doesn’t deserve to be a tech hub. Now the NIMBY homeowners can all watch their home values fall anyway and can get all the “neighborhood character” they deserve.

ok, maybe the hippies and artists will come back--I remember the 60s

gonna miss out when we throw the biggest party ever in north beach, mission, and the castro when the vaccine is rolled out

Now 1 bedroom homes will cost only 2 million instead of 3 million. Yippee!

Just don’t move and vote the same way! Don’t ruin another wonderful city by electing fanatical liberal leaders!

teddyschleifer ...don't forget that oftentimes Internet connectivity is better outside the Silicon Valley even. SF tech denizens used to just move to the East Bay (after the North Bay and before that the Peninsula)

Yuppies love city life, they will be back afterwards.

nextdoorsv You’ll be back

Given WSJs bias I think they’re publishing this article as some kind of dunk on San Francisco, when this is just how property markets work...

I’m sure the filthy streets littered with homeless every six inches have something to do with it. San Francisco isn’t the only city people will be giving up on and fleeing.

And no crazy drug addicts shitting out on your street!

I’m perpetually sad about our communities vanishing due to ppl moving away for “living like a king” but when I check in w those that left - they gravely miss it (speaking of NYC where rent is unforgiving) and some are planning on returning 🙌🏽

Moving out of San Francisco, Bay area into what was once cheaper home buying and rent has raised

Funny thing is libtard pols are trying to take advantsge of crisis and they are too dumb to see how everything is crumbling around them. Remote work is going to destroy libtard cities. They are all gonna turn into baltimore where only non taxpayers live and budgets are cut, etc

please god let them leave, horrible people

Mr. Zuckerburg had some comments re. Salaries for those electing to move elsewhere

Go to SF. Walk around at night. You won’t feel safe in most areas. The homeless are aggressive. Drug use everywhere. Human feces on the sidewalk is not a joke, it is the reality. Weak Dem policies have destroyed another great American city. Don’t take my word, go there.
