Kendall, who helmed the soft drinks giant for 23 years from 1963 to1986, is best known for transforming the New York-based company into the primary competitor of Coca-Cola.

"Our big job is to make this a very profitable company, whether we watch the guy ahead of us or the guy behind," Kendall toldAnd grow he did. Shortly after taking over operations, Kendall shook up the company’s structure, merging its global and domestic operations and restructuring the company around 12 “profit centers,” each with a geographic head reporting to him.

Not all of Kendall’s early venture’s would prove successful; an ill-fated attempt to go into sugar-refining cost the company millions in the mid-1960s, as did efforts to diversify into equipment rental. If the hard-charging efforts to grow at any cost early in his tenure as CEO made his name, they were something of a yoke around his neck in later years. By 1975, with his second-in-command McKinsey veteran Andrall Pearson, Kendall had diversified PepsiCo into an almost unrecognizable company, with just 45% of its revenues stemming from drinks, despite being its most profitable offering. The rest was a mess of equipment leasing, snacks, sporting goods and transportation via various subsidiaries.

While Pepsi largely continued to play second fiddle to Coca-Cola, Kendall worked tirelessly finding ways to remain competitive, from keeping bottling margins down to utilizing Lay’s trucking efficiencies to establishing strategic distribution by purchasing Pizza Hut. He was also able to leverage his past experience as Pepsi’s head of international business to expand into new markets.
