SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Mary Marvel — the sister of the current champion of Shazam, Billy Batson — faces off against her worst nightmare: being forgotten in Billy's shadow as the Captain. Just like her fans, she's worried about her status in the current Shazam era, but she's actually more prominent than she may think.
Mary Marvel addresses these fears in Knight Terrors: Shazam #2 by Mark Waid, Roger Cruz, Wellington Dias, Arif Prianto, and Troy Peteri. Just like the rest of the DC Universe, Mary and her family have been swept up in the mystical nightmares as part of the Knight Terrors event. After managing to save her entire family from their nightmares, Mary gets trapped in her own. She's snagged by a cruel version of the Captain, and she literally shrinks in his grip as he gets bigger.
As she admits in this moment, her greatest fear is "that the Captain will get so big, so important — that no one will even remember Mary Marvel." Though her family rescues her from the attack, her fears ring true — especially for fans of Mary's character and recent journey.
With Billy once again using Shazam's magic, it only makes sense that Mary — after standing tall as the sole champion — would fear being forgotten in Billy's shadow. It's also a fear shared by Mary's fans, as it's only too common to see female characters pushed aside as comic-book publishers prioritize the core male characters. This was an especially pressing fear after Mary seemed to, finally, take her brother's place only to be "demoted" back to Mary Marvel.
Shazam's Sister Is a Marvel All Her Own That said, it's still refreshing to see this fear addressed so explicitly in Mary's own Shazam-titled story, and this Knight Terrors two-shot has reflected fans' anxieties about how many female characters have been brushed aside over the years. Fans aren't wrong to be frustrated about Mary's apparent "demotion" from champion, but Mary Marvel — with her new goddess-connected powers — is now a hero in her own right.
