ST. GEORGE, Utah – A body believed to be the remains of a missing 5-year-old girl who was killed by her uncle were found Wednesday less than a block from her Logan, Utah, home.Alexander Whipple, 21, the girl’s uncle, was charged with the girl’s murder. He reportedly provided information about the location of the girl’s remains in exchange for removing the death penalty from consideration, according to police.
Wednesday evening, Jensen announced that human remains, believed to be Shelley, were located around 2 p.m. in a wooded area approximately a half block away from the residence from which the 5-year-old disappeared. According to the charging documents, investigators located a knife with what appeared to be blood near the parking lot of a Logan charter school. The knife, broken near the hilt, was consistent with a set of knives located in Shelley's home.
DNA tests determined that the blood found on the knife, as well as articles of Whipple's clothing including a hooded sweatshirt and watch, belonged to Shelley, officials said. Cache County Sheriff's Office deputies located Whipple around 3 p.m. and took him to the Logan Police Department.
