The first two verses feature Joyner playing a character questioning their sexuality. No matter how well-meaning the intent is, the hackneyed lyrics sound exactly like what would happen if a straight man tried to describe what he thinks the gay experience is like over a beat that would have been left onI grew up different than I was raisedBut it’s Eminem’s part that genuinely sends the song off the rails.
That lyric is presented like it’s a bombshell. The man who spent the entirety of his career dropping homophobic slurs, but also performing at The Grammys with Elton John just rapped, “What if I told you I’m gay, too?” 20 years ago, the moment would’ve likely been seen as revolutionary. In 2019, its intentions are easy to parse.
“What If I Was Gay?” means very little when we’re only one year removed from Eminem rapping, “Tyler create nothin’, I see why you called yourself a f****t, bitch” on “Fall,” because he didn’t . Instead of two straight males spending five minutes trying to answer “what if I was gay,” maybe the world would be better off with them answering, “who is this song really for?”
this article is worse than ☝️ could have imagined from this publication
how do y'all bring up one of Eminem's biggest songs and put it on the wrong album..... i can tell y'all typed this just to type...
Rolling stone listened to an unofficial unreleased song
How can you post this article when it wasn't vetted and shows a lack of basic research. Not only is this article missing the mark, it states that Stan is 'The third single from The Eminem Show'
❤💚💜💙💛💊

It's sad to see this type of low quality article come from a publication like Rolling Stone. Opinions aside, how hard is it to correctly reference which album a track is from... Stan is not on the Eminem Show...
I would love to see a movie about Marshall’s life story when all is said and done w the right directors producers just imagine Based on truth solid sources 😳
who at let this dummy convince them they can write an article involving Eminem when its clear they dont know anything about him. Quality writing boys
rolling stone is a joke
this shit article is what happens when u have people that don’t know shit about a certain genre writing about it lmfao
The only huge mistake is waisting time reading this review, which only spreads hate and is not objective at all.
You totally misunderstood the song and you clearly didn't understood Eminem and his lyrics over the years nor his position over homophobia. The article is misleading and totally wrong. Something we shouldn't expect from Rolling Stone, honestly.
“Stan” is not on ‘The Eminem Show’.
