Conversations around sexual violence have shifted from shame and silence toward transparency and accountability. More survivors than ever are bravely coming forward to share their experiences. But their credibility, rights, pain, and trauma are still challenged, questioned, and targeted.

." It was a chance to center and listen to marginalized individuals by discussing what we envisioned for the anti-violence movement. As an organizer and survivor of sexual violence, I noticed that while we continue to have more and more of these conversations, there has not been much progress made in how we heal as a community when harm is done.

Within the prison industrial complex, incarcerated folks are not given the proper mental health and counseling services in addition to being subjected to deplorable conditions and violence. We cannot continue to address violence with more violence, and incarceration is violence. These systems also harm survivors of violence who are affected by the sexual-abuse-to-prison pipeline.

Often times as a movement takes hold, people begin to value virality or celebrity above what is most important: working to eradicate violence. The idea of celebrity leads many to uphold systems that oppress others as long as capital is involved. A lot of work has to be done in order for us to get to a place where violence does not exist—work that not only the movement but society is not ready to do.

Sexual violence should not be a partisan issue. We should believe and support ALL survivors. We have to address oppressive systems. We have to take these conversations beyond a hashtag. As Tarana Burke once said, “It’s not a moment, it’s a movement.” Survivors coming forward about their abuse and calling out their abuser is just the beginning; what we do next with these stories in order to create a safe environment is important. You can start by connecting with those who are already doing the work. Donate to grassroots organizations that work on this issue. Educate yourself and others on sexual violence, consent, healthy relationships, and their rights. Educate yourself on legislation and policymakers in your community.
