Recyclers Stuck With Millions of Uncashed Empties in Lockdown

Michiganders are sitting on $60 million worth of empty bottles and cans, a lot of them rattling around in the back of Thad Zajac’s Ford Escape.

Among the 10 U.S. states where grocery and liquor stores pay a nickel or a dime for empty bottles and cans, many have shut down recycling collection centers in Covid-19 lockdowns, leaving residents with a pile of illiquid assets.

Well, it’s good to sell them. Many a little makes a mickle. And it’s also environmentally friendly.

The environmental reason to recycle hasn't lessened. Please continue to keep everything out of landfills that we are able to.

This system never really worked. Now, with the situation(s) plaguing the US. the recycling system has been exposed for what it really is, a fraud.

Some ppl are stuck with empty beer containers too. Despite a NY State law that mandates the acceptance of empty containers for products they sell (and on which they collect deposits), Walgreens is refusing to accept empties and refund deposits. Blatant violation by Walgreens

Offer the bags of empties to the beggars and homeless. Maybe give them a ride to the store. Redeeming the cans will feel rewarding. Small direct giving makes you feel good.

It's 10 cents in Michigan. And, I'm calling BS on this once again. Large stores have automatic machines that crush and smash the empties into plastic bags. Employees don't directly handle the returns. Small Mom & Pop stores are another matter. So, give me back my deposit money

What They better save those bottles because as soon as this thing is over can you can you imagine how much money they’ll have. People better get on board with saving empties those 5cents add up quite nicely.

We've accumulated about $150 of returnables here in Michigan.... NFW we're throwing that money away.
