More than $400 million of unspent federal SNAP benefits sat on cards held by Pennsylvanians last month.

With 566 households in Pennsylvania having at least $10,000 in unspent Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or food stamp, benefits sitting on the Electronic Benefit Transfer cards last month is raised as an argument against Gov. Josh Shapiro's proposal to use $16 million of state funds to supplement the federally funded SNAP benefits. Jan Murphy | jmurphy@pennlive.com.

Many of the more than 1.9 million Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program recipients who receive these benefits, also known as food stamps, had balances on their Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT, cards - some of them topping $10,000.
