It was well north of 3 a.m. when the soft hooting of a distant great horned owl pulled me from the gentle arms of Morpheus, that mythological god of sleep and dreams.

I think that’s what I was hearing when there would be a more distant hoot after the closer bird would vocalize. Hooting this time of the year can also be a prelude to breeding. While there are individual variations, the male will usually produce a characteristic call consisting of a longer hoot, followed by three or four shorter hoots. Females will respond with a raspy reply.The great horned owl is found throughout San Diego County and is the most widespread owl species in North America.
Because of the owl’s size and with its distinctive ear tufts of feathers, this ubiquitous creature has been embraced by Native American cultures as well as Greek and Roman mythology. The heart has many answers to the hooting of the owl. Indians in California’s High Sierra believed that the great horned owl captured the souls of the dead and carried them to the underworld, while the Kwakiutl of the Northwest were convinced that owls were the souls of the departed.
