The right-hander has been the Rangers’ least effective starter through eight games of the season.

Texas Rangers pitcher Jon Gray delivers during the first inning of a baseball game against the Houston Astros at Globe Life Field, Saturday, April 6, 2024 in Arlington. He was one of baseball’s best starters last May when he recorded a 1.95 ERA in five starts and ended the first half with a 3.29 ERA.

His most impressive singular at-bat, possibly, came because he fell behind in the count early vs. Houston designated hitter Yordan Alvarez on Saturday. Gray threw three straight balls to Alvarez in the first inning, but rallied back to strike him out with a fastball; Alvarez, last season, yielded a .743 on base percentage in 3-0 counts.“It just seems like nothing’s flowing right now,” Gray said Saturday after the Rangers’ 10-2 win.

Opponents hit .346 against Gray’s fastball last season, but his slider served as an effective counter. The decrease in velocity doesn’t help his fastball or his slider, both of which batters have hit .313 against in his first two starts. Gray hopes that velocity drop is an early-season issue, and said that anytime it had dipped in the past, it tends to return to form within a week or two.“I’ll just stay on top of that,” Gray said. “I’m going to have to stretch it out more, throw more long toss, really get after it in the weight room, some arm bike.”Shawn McFarland
