The new PBS documentary, 'Disco: Soundtrack to a Revolution,' gets behind the stereotypical white suits and finger-pointing dances to the roots and reasons for the genre's birth, its rise and crash in the mainstream. Nona Hendryx of Labelle talks about the music and the environment that spurred it.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Throughout the history of popular music, the next big style was frequently gestated in an underground scene or culture before exploding into the mainstream. The soon-to-be “newest thing” is slowly picked up by folks on the fringes of pop culture, usually anodized to some extent and presented to mainstream audiences in a form they can consume before becoming a pale over-commercially exploited imitation of its former underground glory.

The documentary aims to go beyond the stereotypical white suits and “decorative” coke spoons that many associate with disco and highlight the music -- and the culture that bred it in the Black, Latin and gay clubs of 1970s Manhattan. Hendryx, a self-described “club bunny” was embedded in the scene for the entire era, even though she admits she was too busy partying with friends and colleagues to notice a cultural shift was beginning to happen.

Episode #2 chronicles disco’s rise into to the mainstream and important DJs such as Larry Levan and of course, clubs like Studio 54. It also explores how the movie “Saturday Night Fever” turned disco into a mainstream phenonomenon that took over the rest of the ‘70s. “It wasn’t so much about the fame. It was more about having a time to express yourself vocally and with a fashion statement,” she says. “There were so many many talented women who had not been exposed. All of a sudden they were everywhere because they were the driving forces of this music. Yes, there was the beat. Yes, there were the DJs. But the voices that carried the music. You began to see that there was no, almost like no end to the incredible voices that there here.

The episode also tracks the infamous Disco Demolition Night at at Chicago White Sox game at Comiskey Park in 1979 led by Chicago DJ Steve Dahl, who denotated a dumpster full of presumed disco records brought by disco-hating fans between games of a double header. The stunt led to an all out riot, but for many pop culture analysts the event represents the beginning of the death of the disco era.
