“Where did the test kits for Prince Charles and Boris Johnson come from?” one person asked, before pointing out that medical workers with Britain's National Health Service were struggling to get tested.

The lack of clarity on testing kits has become an increasing source of public criticism of the government's response to the pandemic.

“There is clearly more to do and we are ramping up that effort on testing … and of course key workers, front-line NHS and social care workers are front of the queue for that,” he said, using the British word for line. The United Kingdom's Department of Health and Social Care told NBC News by email Friday that it had tested more than 97,000 people — one of the highest numbers in Europe — and had already set out plans to increase testing capacity to 25,000 people a day.
