Jennifer Aniston made headlines at the start of November when she declared, “There are no more movie stars.” It’s a statement that Quentin Tarantino agrees with, as evidenced by t…

“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”

Tarantino also clarified in the interview that he does not “hate” Marvel movies but dislikes them for being the only product Hollywood is interested in making these days. “My only axe to grind against them is they’re the only things that seem to be made,” he added. “And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them. That’s what they’re excited about. And so it’s just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There’s not really much room for anything else. That’s my problem.

Envy much?

Doesn't work Quentin. Your characters were not stars I guess so somehow you think that makes your actors better? Why the need to bash others work?

Technically, most of them were already movie stars before they joined the MCU playing superheroes, but I digress. Agree to disagree.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Old people hipster jargon ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

So when the news cycle gets slow do y’all just call up your favorite directors for their opinions on this?

He basically means, the star is the comic franchise character. People come as a fan of the comic title character, not the actor playing them. This is an interesting observation.

Issue is too many superhero movies... instead just make a good movie. Neeson temp quit acting saying it was a Director's medium. But we want our artists to be artists. Let the writers write and let the actors act. When Samuel Jackson wakes up in the morning he just wants to act.

Tarantino has a point!

Hollywood is riding the superheroes horse to death rather sooner than later. What's next then?

TOM CRUISE is definition of MOVIE STAR..

I have to agree with that 👍🏻

Mcu stans are in a frenzy 🤣

Tom Cruise is star

He’s right. Just because actors & actresses have worked in Marvel films doesn’t mean that their careers & accomplishments are cemented yet.

And yet I know all the names of the actors who play marvel characters. Marvels good at branding. If actors aren’t movie stars it’s industry’s fault for not finding a way to connect their product with audiences.

Pretty sure i dont remember the name of any actor that has played jesus or hitler either. Its not about the actors for us. Its how they act into the character. Its called ACTING ffs!

Well he's right....Evans, Hemsworth, Olsen, Brie etc., haven't found success outside Marvel......not everyone can be Tom Cruise, Leonardo, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Harrison Ford, Christian Bale etc...

Chris Evans definitely not the star 😂 He's not wrong...he's referring to Tom Cruise, or Leonardo Dicaprio who earns more than Jennifer Lawrence for some reason 😂

Recast Chris Evans and reboot Captain America in a brand new story outside of the MCU brand and then we'll see if this holds weight. We're seeing more and more fan favorite actors and actresses returning to iconic roles. Just sayin.

Quentin spittin’ W’s lately, i love it.

He's right.

Just shut up already.

Tom cruise is kind off of still a super star and the last super star of hollywood

Movie stars are more movie stars than they have ever been.

The issue is, that’s what actors are supposed to do. The character should be the star. Good actors play roles so well that they feel different from their characters.

No actor is bigger than the character they're portraying

QT hss a valid point about the loss of stars, but his rationale is off. Stars are lacking because Hollywood values physical attractiveness over talent. In today's Hollywood, a James Cagney or Barbara Stanwyck would have little to no chance of leading a film.

He has a point!

There wouldn’t be a Capt. America without CHRIS!!

he's absolutely right

Seeing how no one can name anything he’s been in post Avengers besides Knifes out he’s right

I hate marvel everyone look at me I’m so sophisticated

Very astute.

This is absolutely true, especially when Hollywood movie culture has become more and more IP driven and metatextual by the day.

And he’s absolutely, 100% right. RDJ, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth are all stars, but it’s their characters that are selling tickets. I love how people try to argue with men/women whom are actually IN the business and know. Just b/c you’re a fan doesn’t mean you know everything.

Quentin Tarantino looks like a puckered ass.

Marvel fans being constantly reminded their movies aren't cinema and the actors aren't movie stars

All right so what.

He’s not wrong. People aren’t going to Captain America because it’s a Chris Evans movie.

It's an interesting argument and I mostly agree but you still have big stars - Rdj, Chris Evans who have been elevated massively and can draw audiences now due to marvel

Facts.

Before everyone gets mad, Anthony Mackie said the same thing 5 years ago

It’s kinda true though. Leonardo DiCaprio said some time ago to timothee chalamet to not do superhero movies. And it’s true. A lot of people watch DiCaprio movies because of DiCaprio’s acting. Not a superhero cape or comic book lore.

I can’t believe I’m saying this about anything QT says, but … he’s right.

True!

And he’s right

My thing is it’s entertainment, so the people that are going to see the films are being entertained with a product they like. If you want people to be entertained by your product then make better products. Simple.

Why should society idolize any actor? The story and characters should always be the stars of a movie. When it comes to Superheroes, these characters were created before we were born and will still be around long after us.

Yeah, that's a terrible take.

He's literally correct and there is no benefit to pretending otherwise.

It's true. Cause these actors hardly have successful careers outside of Marvel once they are cast as these roles.

which gives way to the average joe. love this for the commoners that have been looking to break out into cinema & such.

He’s not wrong. People will watch those movies no matter who play the role. Cinema isn’t what it was in the 90s or 2000s.

He's not wrong. Anthony Mackie said it best when he talked about how viewers used to go see the new 'Stallone movie' versus now where movie marketing is based less on the actors and more on the IP. They're not seeing the new 'Hemsworth movie,' they're seeing the new MEN IN BLACK'

He’s so right

Not enough feet for him. This is why he is so pressed.

He's not wrong, but it's also not nee information. It's not life changing. It means very little.

Quentin is always right

Quentin, is sucking up to his mentor Shut up and make a film

🤷🏽‍♂️terrible headline u making it sound like he’s dissing Chris Evan’s .

He's 100% correct

RamonVillalobos Heartbreaking: Biggest Weirdo You Know Just Made An Excellent Point

If this is true why were so many people concerned about whether or not they recast T’Challa? Does this extend to a BLACK Captain America as well?

a good story should always be about the character, not the actor. people should see and judge a story and characters for what they are, not who is starring.

It's facts. Outside the MCU, the actors like RDJ, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans fail to sell tickets. But on the other hand actors like Leo, Pitt and Tom Cruise can easily sell tickets.

that’s facts and it why people hold the actor to the impossible standard of the character they play because they can’t separate the actor from the character

Absolutely based and right take LMAO. Same thing with Downley.

The future Tarantino is going to make gritty bloody tribute to superhero movies long after the genre is mostly dead, just like Tarantino did with Kill Bill or Hateful Eight.

Came into the comments just to make sure there were plenty of people who totally missed his point and in what will be a surprise to absolutely fucking nobody , i was right!

He's correct that the characters themselves are the star of these movies. But I wish people would stop thinking this is solely a Marvel thing. He says 'Marvel-isation' as if none of this shit existed before they came along. There has never been a blockbuster franchise before then

Marvel movies make vastly more money than movie star movies ever made with rare exceptions. The problem isn't Marvel. It's the studios who are chasing franchise box office and simply not producing movie star movies anymore.

The sign of a good actor

Tom cruise the last super star of hollywood ,nly he had some star value ,rest all are just movie based ,charector and film based still stars, even tom crusie also its hard and some stars still exist in south indian films like tollywood etc

Rare Tarantino L

'My only axe to grind against them is they’re the only things that seem to be made,... And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them. That’s what they’re excited about.'

Okay I disagree now, I know these people are known for the characters they are most famous for but that doesnt mean they dont act. If thats the case Mark Hamill isnt an actor as well as Elijah Wood. I dont care what rhetoric he comes up with.

Exactly.

And this is probably a good thing too.

jonnajarian He’s not wrong ! ChrisEvans is a whiney little bith!

Dude's a sore loser. Hate on success and success will hate on you.

He's not wrong and he's not saying it's a bad thing, he's just saying it. Even Anthony Mackie said as much.

They’re spittin lol

Umm… Chris Evans has had a variety of roles over the years besides Captain America. He IS a movie star.

He is right

Been saying this for over 10 years

MOVIESTARS: RUSSELL CROWE TOM CRUISE BRAD PITT JOHNNY DEPP LEO DICAPRIO THE ROCK SEAN CONNERY HENRY CAVILL STALLONE ARNOLD WILL SMITH NICOLE KIDMAN

Almost....as if....marvel movis are based on some kind of.....pre-existing property. Lol

It's not just Marvel actors. It's actors in general. Thr characters and the IPs are the stars. If Top Gun was named 'Arial Aces' there is no way it would have made over 1 Billion. If Jurassic World was named 'Dinosaur Island' there's no way it would have made over 1 Billion.

I mean he’s right and wrong BOTH Cap and Chris are the Star

The fact that there have been like 8 Batmen and 3 Spidermen seems to support this idea. Not that a 'movie star' couldn't be part of the MCU but the MCU doesnt rely on the cast to sell it, first and foremost. The actors are like Easter Eggs now, fun additions to the main thing.

Goon

It's a good point, if you replace Chris the film still has it's key selling point, will lose some support but retain most.

Says right.. Tobey Maguire Robert Downey Jr These are guys have nothing in Hollywood, without Marvel.. Tom cruise who makes blockbuster movies without doing Marvel or DC movies..

Oh, okay.

Okay this is boring now

And he's right

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it is why they are like armpits. Everyone has them and they all stink.

I agree with a lot of the discourse surrounding superhero and marvel movies, but I don’t know about this one

GOAT 🐐

Marvel fanboys hyped Iron Man's performance in Endgame for the Oscars.😂😂

I think it is the first time I agree with Tarantino.

...which is a good thing.

besides tom cruise and leo who is movies star today

He’s correct

Well by that measure Vincent Vega is the star.

what is going with this dude lately omg

Quentin Tarantino advises critics of his slur use to avoid his movies'See something else,' Quentin Tarantino advises critics in a new interview. 'If you have a problem with my movies, then they aren’t the movies to go see.' It was a little odd to cast himself in a role that uses the N word 50 times in a single scene. Of course he does I’m pretty sure he’s grandfathered in at this point, but him giving himself the lines with the word gives me pause.
