The emir known as 'Tamim the Glorious' is doubling down on suppressing criticism of any kind in Qatar

Qatar has promoted itself as a beacon of openness in a repressive region. It hosts Al Jazeera, a popular Arab satellite station that broadcasts opinions suppressed elsewhere in the Middle East. And it is a haven to those fleeing Arab despots. But its emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is less tolerant of criticism directed at him.

The institutions tasked with holding the government to account are window-dressing, say critics. The Consultative Assembly, Qatar’s parliament, sits in a gleaming white building laced with arabesque. But its 45 appointees wield little power. Elections promised in 2003 never took place. Al Jazeera “is free to criticise other countries but never to criticise Qatar”, says a media-watcher in the emirate.

Why is this a shock? It's obvious Quatar is a stone age monarchy dressed up to look modern.

At least, Qatar is trying in this front.

Wa wawall wewweaawe

I live in Qatar. You can pretty much do and say whatever you want as long as you don't disrespect the local culture. The country's been under siege for three years now so maybe that has something to do with these new laws.

Then neither can the UK.

Good tweet, Economist. Qatar is famed for openness like John Wayne Gacy is famed for being a clown.

I love repabulic of Qatar with best wishes happy valentine day

Well, d’uh. A bit like the bbc claiming to be trusted and transparent when its staff block those who raise concerns on twitter, it bans those asking questions it can’t answer via complaints, and claims exemptions on almost any FOI.

No middle eastern country can be a beacon of openness as long as their strict religious ways rule the land.

Sudden attack from the Economist on Qatar after receiving a generous donation from Saudi Arabia!

Freedom of speech, Freedom of Speech you are getting on my nerves cursed be Qatar Gov😈😈😈😈.

Two articles against Qatar in one day! Did Saudi Arabia acquire the Economist?

Qatar violates human rights big time and Aljazerah is silent

Just as Trump claims to run the most 'Transparent' administration because on a good day he'll stop for a moment before boarding, spew some lies. His press secretary has nothing to say, and hasn't tried for almost a year! More DUIs than press conferences so far, Ms Whats-her-name.

Oh and punishing gay people with death for ... Being gay. Who exactly thinks Qatar is a beacon of openness?

So MBZ's basket of gifts has arrived in the Economist building, apparently.
