Q: It’s almost impossible to refer to this book, thematically, about any one thing other than Screw. It’s about music, creative process, community. But it occurs to me throughout, there’s a lot of content that unites it around a family theme: the one you’re born into and the one you create.Yes, yeah, I’m glad you got that from it. Family was a big deal. There was immediate family, which was important to him on a core foundational level. And then there was this family he created over the years.
Q: How difficult was it to detangle history from mythology? Screw has become an iconic figure, and there’s mystique around him, which can make hard details difficult to lock down.You do have to be careful there. You have to not venture into alternate histories. You have to manage different viewpoints about certain things that happened. There’s this kind of folklore … because itfolklore, this mythology that surrounds Screw. And he didn’t do a lot of interviews.
Q: Which can create narrative complications, I’d imagine. Memories are wonderful and dubiously reliable.Exactly. I tried to cross-reference the oral histories as much as I could. You get one person who declares “I did this!” And somebody else might quietly say the same thing while responding to a different question. Those little kernels of information, man, they feel like the sun coming out from behind the clouds. Especially to me, because — from my heart — I love Houston.
