MOSCOW - Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament, on Tuesday called the case against Ivan Golunov, an investigative journalist charged with drug offences, a “very bad story,” the Interfax news agency reported. The comments, by a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, are likely to encourage supporters of Golunov who believe he was framed and have organized protests demanding the charges against him be dropped. Our Standards:

Russian newspapers show solidarity with detained journalistIn a show of rare solidarity, Russia's three major newspapers put out nearly identical front pages to support a detained journalist. Hmmm....Putin is involved, somehow. But, if the journalist is released, it's a good thing. Hmmm. Interesting. If legit, I'd (cynically) consider as evidence their efforts are ongoing, if not intensifying. Very interesting. Dem Ruskies don't play, huh? .It's a trick.
