As a Haitian-American anthropologist who works on the Black diaspora, I have to say this is really a perfect example of cultural appropriation. It is particularly egregious in these BLM times. You want the culture but not the people. You do not take something just because you can. This was nothing short of a colonizing move by someone who should know better. Chef Marcus you should do more than change the name here. Your book should also include an erratum.
You are messing with our collective souls! 😡🤬😤 and Jane Doe thanks for the real recipe I’m going to try it.I can see the name has changed. Great, but you guys should take out the nonsense story that you wrote about Haitian Soup Joumou also,And saying that is your take on it is so disrespectful. You don't put your take on a traditional meaningful Cultural dish. You should have known that. Respect people's culture.
Funny how people can turn insufferably nationalistic when it comes to “their” cuisine. It’s a soup. A stew. There are hundreds of Beef Bourguignon variations yet I don’t see “the French” complaining. Marco Pierre White said there is not such thing as “authentic” - only variations
It's depressing to see that BA is unable to right itself after the troubles of this past summer. If the holiday issue (I absolutely hated it.) is an indication of what's to come from BA it won't be long before it goes the way of Gourmet magazine.
Just take it down. You still refer to it as a reference to Haiti. IT IS NOT. Do not misrepresent us. It’s intolerable and disrespectful.
The Haitian New Year's Day tradition of soup joumou or pumpkin soup is said to date back to January 1, 1804, the day Haitian slave and revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared Haiti’s independence from its French colonizers. KNOW YOUR HISTORY 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹
You know what sometimes I feel like they do this shit on purpose. How dare you? 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹
I can't believe how awful this mob mentality cancel culture bullshit has gotten. This platform has created the new age salem witch trials. The people freaking out over soup should be ashamed of themselves. BBQ has its roots in slavery, are you going to cancel that too? Pathetic.
I gather this is Samuelsson’s take but the difference is drastic. Soup joumou is savory and can be spicy, it is never sweet nor does it include nuts. Mais vraiment vous n’avez pas même demandé aux haïtiennes comment ils percevaient cet article?! c’estfatra
“Cannons were fired, church bells rung, people cheered, and, they say kettles of fragrant soup Joumou perfumed the air, ready to be ladled up in a mass communion.” But this isn’t that.... sa a se pa sa
That soup has historical meaning behind please remove if from the site and delete the tweet
Why are ya’ll like this?
Erasing Black Culinary History. What about Haiti? Say it ain't so, Marcus. via ncpr
How disrespectful ! Forget Bon Appetit, here's a link to the real thing (text and videos)
REMOVE THE HISTORY OF HAITI FROM THIS ABOMINATION. Stop putting things from people’s cultures that you nothing about!!!
I go away for months and check back in just to see how it’s been going and yep... still being trash
embrace_pivot , nadegefleurimon has a great response and an authentic recipe to share!
do y’all think that haitians just put a bunch of veggies and meat together and decided to call it a soup? take the historical context out bruv
It's not Haitian soup joumou. It's A soup.
Y’all tried it
YO TAKE THIS RECIPE DOWN. It’s still a search result for soup joumou and there are Haitian chefs who have published recipes that are overshadowed by this stupid Panera purée soup. What the fuck is wrong with you
If you can't do it right, just don't bother. Enough with the disrespect already!!!! Uugghhhh
Please remove references to Haiti; this soup has absolutely no relation to our country or it’s independence!
MarcusCooks in your own words, your new cookbook (which includes this soup recipe) 'showcases the diversity of Black excellence in cooking, something we should always celebrate.' I guess people are not getting that. AT ALL.
You should’ve done your homework before allowing this pumpkin purée to bad attempt as soup Joumou Disrespect
MarcusCooks
It’s a beautiful soup! And whatever it’s historical origin, or whatever it is “officially” called, everyone needs to just relax and stop freaking out. It’s just soup for Gods sake. Not the end of the world. peaceout
Wow lots of hating in these comments. I just came to say.... As strange as it looks I'd try it.
How many Black people do you guys have on staff? For real. Answer my question.
Retire non Haïti sou tintin sa épi salop
GG30000 get your boy!!!! The level of disrespect to Haitian meals/history has GOT TO STOP!!!!!
This soup resembles panerabread seasonal butternut squash soup (which us fire) more than soup joumiu so miss me with your fake half ass apology
I still do not see how this recipe is inspired by our soup joumou? I hope MarcusCooks updates his back ok as well. So disappointing!
I don't know what this grimas is but it is not soup joumou 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
why expect anything other than racism from someone that has repeatedly done just that? all the spices in the world can't save this bland ass company ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
howstupidcanyoube? reallyjustreally shameonyou
Our ancestors are not happy with you at all. This is meal of our ancestors tied to our freedom. What you did was INTENTIONAL. MarcusCooks was taught how to make it and he slapped us in the face.
Call thissssss pumpkin soup... not Haitian Soup.
Take my culture off your bon appetit recipe... you’ve disrespected many of our foods to fit your standards... This type of culture didn’t come from us stealing.. it was straight blood and sweat... TAKE THIS DOWN!
Please reach out to us regarding cultural post and recipes. We are glad to help.
You guys are off 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 rails 👏🏼
Why so you guys suck so badly?
I will no longer use as a recipe source. I had a subscription to you as a child who loved cooking and devoured the pages. From the lack of people of color in publishing leadership to this weird appropriation when Haitians are telling you it is not so is just bizarre.
That’s not soup Joumou tho
Soup joumou is more than a dish, there’s history behind it. DELETE THIS
100,000% unsurprised. Trash. A child could do a better job of redeeming this brand that the folks in charge now.
Why am I not surprise to see another food appropriation from you?
What kills me is Marcus learned to make this soup in a Haitian house and got the history first hand (vid on YT) then turned around and put this bullshit in a pot?!! Leave Ayiti out of this Caucasity!!
Y’all don’t fuck up like this when it comes to food from white cultures
