'Our histories as Puerto Rican peoples, collective and individual, are the consequences of oppressions so deep that they’ve become part of our own identity and fabric.'

were just the beginning of the century-long, still ongoing, occupation of Puerto Rico.

“Your English is very good!” was the comment I was most consistently greeted with when I introduced myself to my peers, as if more than a century of colonialism would leave Puerto Ricans lacking the skill set to grasp the intricacies of the English language. But what are the effects of colonialism if not to modify our understanding of realities and possibilities?

While the Department of War solidified the U.S. empire in the Pacific and the Caribbean, most people in the United States remained unaware of the dealings — and conflicts — in Puerto Rico. Over a million Puerto Ricans were controlled by the U.S. military regime until 1900, when the Foraker Act was enacted.

Proclaiming that election results don’t matter because they aren’t the results you want… is bad

Thank to Teen Vogue for publishing this informative article👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 This is how we young minds can form their own opinions with real information. Bravo!

Another article from someone that thinks she knows better than Black and poor Puerto Ricans about our future. Independentistas are master manipulators.

You wrote: 'We have been gaslit into naming ourselves the ones responsible for our own demise, placing the blame on Puerto Ricans’ “inability” to govern ourselves' We see this in play across the Caribbean, while the perps duck the discussion of colonial culpability.

That’s right. And they voted to be part of USA.

Right?...I guess if we had voted to agree with you your narrative would be different. But I guess your love for us include being condescending and insulting at the same time.

I bet the United States would be so owned by Puerto Rican independence 🙄🙄🙄

Your tweet should have an election results disinformation warning.

We already did. We chose statehood!

Puerto Rico must determine its own political future... like, by voting for what it wants?

Not a very good look for the Americans trying to speak over Puertorricans. Maybe remember that we aren't a monolith and there's a lot of context that you guys are missing. So please do us a favor and let us speak for ourselves and just listen.

they voted for statehood. stop pretending they didn't

It’s so rare our lived reality & history is part of the conversation on Puerto Rico status in US media. Usually it’s just about what US statehood would hypothetically mean for Democrats or GOP. Thank you for adding some context elcielodeabril

they already decided

Lop PR literally just voted to be a US state a year ago - they've already determined what they want for their political future.
