Various disaster aid bills and amendments failed to pass the Senate this month as President Donald TrumpSenate Republicans wanted to provide enough money to finance aand $5 million for a study on the impact of emergency aid after the hurricane, while also making sure that southern hurricane-hit states such as Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, as well as Midwestern states such as Iowa and Nebraska suffering from floods had access to more aid.
While Senate Democrats agreed on adding aid to other states, they countered that Puerto Rico was not getting enough money to address its needs. Democrats wanted to also provide funds for additional projects on the island such as FEMA reimbursements to local government entities who spent money doing emergency-related work; as well as $25 million to restore the Caño Martín Peña, a body of water that stretches alongside the San Juan Bay area and is surrounded by low-income communities that were hit hard by Maria.
“What do we say to them [Republicans and Trump]? You’re not getting a nickel for anywhere else until Puerto Rico is fully funded … Next time I see you, I hope I can say that we got the aid for the rest of America but that we also got the same amount for 3 million American citizens who live in the island of Puerto Rico,” said Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., during a gala event Thursday night.
“It’s going to take a very long time to recover and people are going to get impatient… that’s why leaders need to step up and clearly address progress in a realistic, holistic way,” Kellar told NBC.to support Puerto Rico and the floods in the Midwest. Lawmakers will most likely vote on the legislation when congressional sessions resume on April 29.
We need these funds here at home!
NBCLatino We are american citizens who have merely survived an humanitarian crisis. Our fellow citizens of the United States have been always been supportive of our pain. Unfortunately, Trump and the federal government officials don't.
I thought the Clinton foundation sent them a ton of money.
Puerto Rico was given billions in aid...perhaps if their local govt wasn't so corrupt, they could have done some good w/that $$ and helped the ppl
Unbelievable!
Trump is a failure. Trump could easily sign an executive order to help Puerto Rico. He is worthless.
demonic trump a murder
Drop PR. We don’t need them
What's with all the hate against Puerto Rico? Perhaps they need to declare their own independence? I'm sure there would be a country out there who would treat them like human beings. USA obviously doesn't know what that means.
Democrats hate Puerto Rico.
We gave them 96 Billion dollars, they don’t need anymore money.
Almost half of Puerto Rico's population lived in poverty before the hurricane. Their electric grid, run by the Peurto Rican government, was delapitated before the hurricane. How long are they going to blame a hurricane?
RowlandViki They have already received more disaster funds than Texas & Florida combined! Because of their greedy Democrat leaders, there are still warehouses FULL of spoiled supplies and supplies that were never distributed to the people!
Cause democrats care.
Dear Congress, please, please cut off this black hole of perpetual need from any ties to the U.S.A.. Return this island to being its own independent country. The U.S. gains absolutely nothing from it's territorial relationship with P.R. Like Haiti, it's a no win for the U.S.
Just in time for this year’s hurricane season.
This is uncalled for. These people are Americans, how can we treat this people this way?
Maybe if the Leaders of Puerto Rico gave back the Billions they Stole the citizens would be better off!!Corruption
I think they go enough money . Maybe we should check out how it was spent.
But I thought it was all trumps fault? I’m so confused
Puerto Rico has already gotten more in storm relief than Texas and Florida combined.
Did I read that right? Puerto Rico's waiting on Congress? our democrat controlled Congress is who their waiting on? They are busy right now looking for tax returns sorry can't help you
Puerto Rico will have to wait for hurricane relief? Would Texas or Florida or Louisiana have to wait? Where is the love?
They may have to wait until after 2020.
They’re too busy trying to figure out if 9-11 was bad for the US or not
