While the idea of doing away with letter grades has been associated with progressive private schools, more public schools are trying it out. WBEZ checked in with one school district in the Chicago suburbs to see how it works.

Robert Daniels wanted his kids to attend Winnetka public schools because of its progressive education. From left to right, Taylor Daniels, Emma Daniels, Carter Daniels and Robert Daniels.Getting a report card with letter grades A-to-F is such an ingrained part of American schooling it's hard for many people to imagine school without it. But at the same time, schools are increasingly looking for ways to focus school more on learning — and not on simply getting an A.

Barry Rodgers is the director of innovation, teaching and learning for the district. He says the A to F system doesn't necessarily give a clear picture of how well a student is learning. He experienced this himself when he started off as a science teacher under the traditional grading model. Rodgers sometimes felt conflicted when grading his students because it could feel like a game of points."You knew you're giving that student a C," Rodgers said.

Out in west suburban Elmwood Park, schools are preparing to do away with letter grades. Leah Gauthier, director for curriculum and instruction with Elmwood Park District 401, said they've learned from other districts. The district is doing a pilot in some classrooms this year, and plans to do a full rollout for kindergarten to 5th grade next year.

Olson said it's not just about dropping the letters. It's about putting the emphasis on learning. For example, if a student is still struggling with fractions by the end of the math chapter, that doesn't mean failure.

WBEZ So let me get this straight. Everyone who is opposed to this was also subject to being graded in school, hated going to school, and doesn't remember anything that they learned in school? But you think that's the only way that school can be taught? Makes sense.

WBEZ They’ve been doing this in my child’s school for years. I was told by 1 teacher that at the beginning of the year since they haven’t learned all the material then basically a 4 is unachievable. So even if they work hard it does not reflect on their report cards until end of year

WBEZ Kids need to be held accountable... I agree w/ you either pass or fail. The End. Not everyone deserves a participation trophy !!

WBEZ They are also teaching students cursive again...even though deemed useless...this too shall pass. Let’s find better ways to teach so kids learn more...not evaluating learning doesn’t help. Example, colleges give grades...work provides evaluation reports...etc.

WBEZ The problem with this system is that it doesn’t measure effort. A student to whom mastery of skills comes easily gets a positive report. What about a student who works diligently but struggles to master a skill? Traditional grades show both effort and mastery.

WBEZ What does not get measured does not get done.

WBEZ The number grading system used in my local school district makes it impossible for kids to fail, or get the highest grade possible, and really cultivates mediocrity. That's why we homeschool. My kid wanted more for themselves than the school would allow.

WBEZ Grade them like this: Weighting and dropping by a percentage the lowest score.

WBEZ Sitting with two teens now and talking about this. The real question is mastery of concepts/materials, not whether to issue letter grades. How can we help kids with mastery of materials and not just test taking skills? How do we evaluate to help learning and not just to label?

WBEZ It is probably more fair. The system is set up for average. At either end of that are a lot of students who don't fit average.

WBEZ Check out City-As-School (M560) in NYC. They're public. They're progressive. They've ditched grades (and continue to do so) since their inception in 1972.

WBEZ Hey man, I’ve got a great idea: like no grades in school man

WBEZ Grades are a joke.

WBEZ Far out. Just wake me up when I have to go to the Gulag, ok?

WBEZ That seems like it compromises education by leaving the students actual grade ambiguous. Also what does it show on transcripts sent to colleges?

WBEZ We got report cards with three categories: Meeting Standards, Exceeding Standards, Working Towards Standards.

WBEZ that truthfully sounds like a boring segment just watch CasinoLizard Ep 44 is TOPS Art VideoArt Noir CinemaNoir
