HONG KONG - The anti-government protests that have roiled Hong Kong for four months have also split the city’s influential entertainment community, with stars who weigh in doing so at the risk of alienating fans on either side of the often-bitter divide.

Tam’s measured response on his Weibo-like Twitter account - “People with different political stances have different reactions. They don’t respect me, but I respect them. I will go eat again next time” - won him plaudits on mainland Chinese social media. Action star Jackie Chan has long pledged his allegiance to Beijing, describing himself in August as a “flag-bearer” after protesters in Hong Kong desecrated China’s national flag.

In 2000, China banned top Taiwan pop singer Chang Hui-mei for a year after she performed at the inauguration of Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian, viewed by Beijing as a dangerous separatist.

Out in the streets, be streetwise, show support to anti-china protests for your safety otherwise they will beat you up.

A piece of wisdom to both China and Hong Kong --don't bite off more than what you can chew.

We used to respect Alan Tam, he stood up for the students in the Tiananmen event in 1986. 30 years later, he gave up his stand in exchange of benefit, claiming it is nothing politics. Can you imagine our disappointment to one we used to be admired becoming like this?

They are shameful, Hong Kong don't need them anymore.

Shockingly Silent bc of massive Chinese fan base? Reap where you sow? No actions nor words of support for % of local fans on home turf? Shame.

America will soon have its Hong Kong style protests. Why? Because the FBI and CIA are filled with partisan hacks and career driven sociopaths who like to subvert democracy and hand out porn to teenagers. (yes really)
