Climate activists protest as Siemens decides to remain involved in a controversial coal mining project in Australia, despite massive environmental criticism and unprecedented bushfires there

People protest with banners and placards in front of one buildings of the German industrial giant Siemens in Munich, southern Germany, on January 13, 2020.

In a statement on their website, Fridays for Future said Siemens' decision was "catastrophic", and that the mine "threatens worldwide efforts to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius."Australian climate activist Varsha Yajman, 17, said that the decision would "destroy" Siemens' reputation. Amid growing calls for Siemens to quit the project, Kaeser met with leading Fridays for Future activist Luisa Neubauer in Berlin on Friday and claimed he was "on the same side" as environmentalists.

Firefighters drag their water hose after putting out a spot fire near Moruya, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020. Neubauer accused companies involved in financing fossil fuels of using "creative PR" to burnish their green credentials.
