Thousands gathered at protests across D.C. in calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the West Bank, with hundreds arrested during one demonstration.

Protesters calling for a ceasefire to the conflict in Gaza held a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in northwest Washington D.C. organized by Jewish Voices for Peace and led by the Palestinian Youth Movement on Oct. 18, 2023 Thousands gathered at protests across D.C. in calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the West Bank, with hundreds arrested during a demonstration that made its way into a congressional building.

An alert was also issued by the House Sergeant at Arms, stating that all pedestrian entrances to the House Office Buildings are restricted to Members and Staff only, with Public and Official Business visitors only permitted to enter at South Capitol Street. Just after 6 p.m., protest organizers also announced a protest outside of the Israeli embassy in Northwest DC led by the Palestinian Youth Movement.

The situation happened during a planned event by the IfNotNow Movement and Jewish Voice for Peace groups. A spokesperson with the U.S. Secret Service confirmed the incident, stating the arrests were due to protesters crossing safety barriers or blocking entrances near the White House complex.
