Crackdown at Echo Park homeless encampment looms as LAPD stages nearby As of Wednesday night, there were signs authorities planned to take some kind of action in the coming hours — if only to post notices telling the residents they must leave. Latest at

The impending showdown at a homeless encampment on the banks of Echo Park — the iconic cinematic backdrop for Hollywood stars from Charlie Chaplin to Jack Nicholson — is becoming a highly charged test of city leaders’ struggle to balance constituents’ demands for clean streets and public spaces with the ever-growing tragedy of people who have no homes.

More police were staging at Dodger Stadium in anticipation of a park closure, and sanitation trucks were parked with yellow lights flashing.A large crowd had amassed on Glendale, including some protesters opposed to clearing the camp. Some residents of the camp have agreed to go. But others are vowing to stay and resist eviction. They argue that the park, nestled in a small canyon with a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline, has been elevated by the homeless residents and their allies as a place of beauty that gives those living there the dignity and safety they could not find on sidewalks and under freeways.

Regan’s legacy.

Only Californians will protest to KEEP homeless on the streets. We really are living in the matrix.

Build a massive homeless shelter near palmdale on govt land?

kevrector Hallelujah

Let them live at the mayor’s house. He’ll just love that.

I blame Trump.

Stop it now before it gets out of control. Otherwise LA will become another Seattle.

Humanity is in sheltering the unhoused and being responsible for the lives of vulnerable. Not to argue that our unhoused neighbors who have died at the rate of 4 per day are better off on the streets! Shame. Seriously shame for misguided ideology that enjoys unhoused suffering

How about the protesters offer the homeless their homes as a place to stay? It's easy to protest. Match your actions with your words

They're not 'residents,' they're squatters. This is obvious. Why are you pretending otherwise?

They drive in from other neighborhoods. People that live in Echo Park should have the final say. Not outsiders.

Hey world! Look at this, extreme poverty in ‘the most powerful country’

Here is why there is a “crack down” on the EchoPark homeless camp Look at the real estate prices $ ' Poverty ruins the views

LA county has failed the homeless time and time again. Every program and supportive housing complex is full and has a waiting list time of 3-7 years. It's total bullshit.

They’re not “residents”, they’re trespassers and criminals. They have no right to be there. Why do the rest of us have to put up with this disgusting nonsense?

NSlayton Always money to abuse the homeless just never money to house them

nice

Considering the hourly rate and potential overtime, isn't it cheaper just to get the homeless into homes?

Incorrect, they’re pulling in trucks with fencing. They are going to violently displace a community fighting for survival.

Wonderful ! Lets have MitchOFarrell provide these people with a proper place to stay. Then the half a million dollars of repairs to the park can be made and the community can use it for what it was originally built for. Great news!!
