A San Antonio man drew 12 years in prison for fleeing the scene after fatally striking a pedestrian in 2020. He had told authorities he thought he had hit a dog. State District Judge Christine Del Prado sentenced Israel Lee Lopez, 35, for running from the accident that killed Yvonne Arias, 26, on April 2, 2020. As part of an agreement reached Feb. 5 between defense attorneys and prosecutors, Lopez pleaded no contest to one count of failure to stop and render aid causing death.
Bystanders told authorities they saw the pickup sliding out of control as it came toward them and heard the impact. One witness said he heard the woman scream as he sat on his porch. The affidavit stated that Lopez’s mother called police the day after the incident to tell them her son was responsible for hitting someone on Roosevelt the night before, and had seen on the news that the woman had died.
