Like ‘Spare,’ Charles Spencer’s ‘A Very Private School,’ is a posh boy’s misery memoir. It is also an exposé of abuse Spencer suffered at a boarding school.

To most Americans, Charles Spencer may be best known as the aristocratic brother of Diana, Princess of Wales, the man who at her 1997and the House of Windsor, pledging that it was “blood family” who would protect young William and Harry after their mother’s death.

Instead, this is a story with a clear remit: to confront the British school system with the abuses it has long enabled. Spencer, destabilized by his parents’ divorce and his mother’s departure from the home, was sent off to Maidwell Hall to learn to be an Englishman. There he was introduced to a world in which teachers brutalize pupils, and the older pupils pass the same cycle of violence onto younger ones. Spencer names teachers responsible for the abuse only if they are now dead, to avoid United Kingdom defamation law.

Like his nephew Harry, Spencer credits therapy with allowing him to process this childhood pain. Unlike his nephew, he seems to have found genuine peace with his past.
