Prince Harry made his first major in-person appearance since moving to the United States more than a year ago, and he made sure to do it with a bang. Appearing at Global Citizen’s Vax Live concert in Los Angeles on Sunday night, the Duke of Sussex received rapturous applause and a standing ovation as he took to the stage as one of the event’s campaign chairs.
“You spent the last year battling courageously and selflessly to protect us all,” he said. “You served and sacrificed, put yourselves in harm’s way, and acted with bravery, knowing the costs. We owe you an incredible debt of gratitude.” He continued, “None of us should be comfortable thinking that we could be fine when so many others are suffering. In reality, and especially with this pandemic, when any suffer, we all suffer. We must look beyond ourselves with empathy and compassion for those we know and those we don’t. We need to lift all of humanity and make sure that no person or community is left behind. What we do in this moment will stand in history.
Billed as the “concert to reunite the world,” Vax Live has already raised more than $53.8 million in philanthropic and corporate commitments to vaccine procurement, medical tools, and supplies, which has far exceeded Global Citizen’s goal. Audience members at the event were fully vaccinated frontline medical and essential workers.
