A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan , causing significant damage to buildings and highways and resulting in the deaths of nine people. The capital city, Taipei , experienced falling tiles from older buildings and schools had to evacuate students to sports fields for safety. A five-story building in Hualien County was left leaning at a 45-degree angle with its first floor collapsed.

The earthquake also caused rockslides in Taroko National Park, resulting in the deaths of three hikers and a van driver. Authorities have lost contact with 50 people in minibuses due to downed phone networks
