C. - U.S. Sen Rob Portman on Sunday praised Poles near the Ukraine border for welcoming an estimated 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russia’s attack and urged the United States to help Ukraine get the fighter jets it needs to fend off the assault.
“We have seen the absolute worst of humanity, and that is these indiscriminate bombings of civilians, but we’ve also seen the best of humanity,” said Portman. “The Polish people have opened their hearts and opened their homes to these folks from Ukraine.”a potential deal that would allow Poland to provide Ukraine with Soviet-style MiG jets that Ukrainian pilots know how to fly, which the United States would replace with U.S. jets.
Portman noted that the United States provided Ukraine with military helicopters as recently as January and also contributed Stinger surface-to-air missiles. “As they escalate, what the Ukrainian people are asking for is just the ability to defend themselves,” said Portman. “Give them the ability to try to stop some of this Russian superiority, in terms of airpower, to be able to save lives, and hopefully end up with a peaceful solution to this. If we don’t figure out a way to help Ukraine push back, that’s much less likely.”
