One of the rarest marine mammals in the world, the North Atlantic right whale, has declined 8% in population over the past year, which researchers call deeply concerning for the species' survival.

The North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium announced Monday the whale's population dropped to 336 in 2020. This is the lowest the population has been in nearly 20 years, according to the consortium.North Atlantic right whales may be on edge of extinction. There have been zero births this year"The new population and mortality estimates for North Atlantic right whales are upsetting and alarming," said Whitney Webber, campaign director at Oceana in the United States, in a statement.

Today, the @NARWC announced that the species population dropped to 336 in 2020, an 8% decrease from 2019. The newly released estimate is the lowest number in nearly 20 years.— New England Aquarium October 25, 2021 Over the past decade, the whales' population has been on a downward trajectory and declined 30%, according to the consortium. In 2011, the species' population was at its highest with an estimated 481 whales.

Just because we don’t see them it doesn’t mean these mammals don’t exist. How much of discovery do we have about the entire ocean?

I don't know if it has anything to do with the Japanese killing whales. We strongly condemn the vicious act of killing whales, which would not be the case for any responsible people who care for the ocean.
