Metro Parks Tacoma has announced the reopening of Owen Beach at Point Defiance Park is set for June 4.

TACOMA, Wash. — With summer right around the corner, a popular Tacoma beach plans to reopen, display its new renovations and bring another source of fun to the community.

As the reopening approaches, deputy director of regional parks and attractions Joe Brady expressed his happiness about reconstructing the beach while preserving the environment at Point Defiance. The park’s total renovations cost $6.3 million and are a part of the Destination Point Defiance plan that was established in 2015. Funding for the new features was provided by Tacoma voter-approved bonds in 2014, Metro Parks Tacoma operating funds and Tacoma Public Schools, according to the release.

As described by deputy director of planning and development Marty Stump, the goal was to revamp the beach in order to make it an area that future generations can enjoy.

METRO undergoes ‘makeover’ with universally accessible bus stopsMETRO celebrated the completion of 2,500 universally accessible bus stops early in May, marking a huge milestone for transportation equality. METRO is committed to upgrading all of its 9,000 bus stops to be universally accessible -- this means when riders choose to use public transportation, their experience will be safer, more comfortable, and they will have better access to health care, school, and work. What role did removing the benches and coverings have to do with this? No shade from the heat, no cover from the rain, and no rest for those who have to stand. An attack on the poor who have to ride the bus. Houston has one of the worst transit systems I've seen.
