Pope Francis is going to the hospital Wednesday for intestinal surgery, two years after he had 13 inches of his colon removed because of an inflammation and narrowing of the large intestine.

The Vatican said Francis, 86, would be put under general anesthesia and would be hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for several days.

In July 2021, Francis spent 10 days at Gemelli to remove 33 centimeters of his large intestine. He had suffered what the Vatican said was a severe inflammation and narrowing of the colon. In an interview with The Associated Press in January, Francis said the diverticulosis, or bulges in his intestinal wall, that prompted the 2021 surgery, had returned.

Francis, 86, had appeared in good form Wednesday morning at his audience in St. Peter’s Square, zipping around the square in his popemobile greeting the faithful. He also had two meetings Wednesday morning beforehand, the Vatican said.

Pope briefly in hospital for scheduled tests two months after bronchitis, returns to VaticanPope Francis has made a quick trip to the hospital for tests. The visit comes more than two months after he was hospitalized with an acute case of bronchitis. The ANSA news agency said Francis went to Rome's Gemelli hospital for tests. Witnesses at the Vatican's Perugino gate, one of the main entrances to the city state, said he returned a short while later and greeted guards. The 86-year-old pope spent three days at the hospital in late March. Initially the Vatican said he had gone in for scheduled tests, but the pontiff later revealed he had felt pain in his chest and was rushed to the hospital where bronchitis was diagnosed. He was put on intravenous antibiotics and was released April 1, quipping that he was “still alive.”
