More than half of Americans say that it's more important to protect the health and safety of teachers and students by moving to remote learning to avoid COVID exposure than to keep schools open for in-person learning, according to a new Harris Poll provided exclusively to Axios. How to handle in-person learning amid yet another surge of cases is again the subject of intense debate following the Chicago Teacher's Union refusal to return to in-person classes as Omicron cases surged.
Of more than 2,000 adults polled between Jan. 7–9, 56% of respondents said protecting the health and safety of teachers and students is more important. More than six in 10 Gen Z, millennial and Gen X respondents chose health and safety over in-person learning, as did 62% of parents with children younger than 18. Only 48% of boomers — or respondents 57 and older — said the same.
Respondents of color were also more likely to prioritize health and safety than white respondents, although a majority of all races and ethnicities did so.There's no doubt that 2020's in-person learning shutdowns were bad for kids, particularly those from lower-income households or families of color.
It isn’t safer for kids-emotionally-In IA most kids came back full time this year - they struggle to focus, talk to their peers, be accountable. Kids need real connection & masks & mandatory vaccine & funding. I work full time in person in HS library.
Most Americans believe in gun control. Most Americans believe in climate change. Most Americans believe in universal health care. Most Americans believe all Americans should be able to freely vote. But there’s that fringe who don’t…it doesn’t seem to matter what MOST believe…
Garbage. What’s the point of vaccines then.
There should be a poll asking specifically parents of students in the K to 12th grade, how they feel.
The irony here, is that they say this, but don't want universal healthcare and better education funding because some CEO told them it won't work...
I couldn't afford to do anything but work full-time when I was in college (and couldn't WAIT to get away from my abusive father). I lived in a dorm for one year, and then I was on my own. I had to work full time. Remote courses are why I have my degree, and WAY pre-pandemic.
Because they’ve been scared shitless over a virus that has a 99.99% survival rate amongst children. Safer than driving a car.
Were the 2000 people polled exclusively in San Francisco? Because that’s definitely not how the rest of the country feels
Don’t tell Nate Silver this, he’ll compare it to the Holocaust or something
