What is our training looking like?” asked Councilmember Pierina Sanchez, who represents the area, in an interview.
Three children were found unresponsive and administered Narcan. A fourth child, who was picked up earlier that day, was later taken to the hospital by his mother after he was acting lethargic and unresponsive, according to police., the childcare center is operated by Grei Mendez De Ventura. It first opened in May and was not issued any violations when it was last inspected on Sept. 6. Phone calls to the center went unanswered.
“If it's a family childcare home, everyone who lives there needs to pass background checks,” said Gregory Brender, chief policy and innovation officer at the Day Care Council of New York. “It includes both criminal background checks and any indications around anything that would be considered a threat to the health or safety of children.”
