DUBLIN — Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Williams was wearing his uniform pants and carrying his service pistol, fresh out of an overtime shift, when he walked through the side gate of his estranged girlfriend’s home.Somehow, sources say, Williams gained entry into the Dublin home a little before midnight on Sept. 7, then headed upstairs to the master bedroom where 42-year-old Maria Tran lived with her husband, Benison.
But the trouble began at least a month earlier, on Aug. 8 when police were called to the Trans’ Colebrook Lane home on a report of a man repeatedly ringing the doorbell. Less than a month later, on Sept. 6, Williams allegedly visited Maria Tran, a nurse, at John George Psychiatric Hospital. The two were observed having a heated conversation, and Tran returned from the meeting appearing upset, but didn’t tell her coworkers exactly what had transpired, according to police.
Williams allegedly confronted Maria Tran, telling her he didn’t know she was still seeing her husband, then told Benison Tran he would leave if the police were called. Benison went downstairs and called 911, and as he headed back upstairs, Williams allegedly shot him from the edge of the staircase, prompting Maria and her brother to attempt to rush Williams and disarm him, according to police.
