SPRINGDALE – Springdale police have charged a Cincinnati man with allegedly spreading nails along busy roads here and in two other communities, using good-old-fashioned shoe leather detective work with a high-tech twist.He's charged with a misdemeanor count of placing hazardous material on a roadside, which carries a sentence of up to six months in jail if convicted.
A local tire store owner suggested police dyed some nails to try and catch him, and after some trial and error, detectives found an invisible varnish which only shows up under UV light.Springdale police suspect Dyson of buying hundreds of pounds of nails at that store in the last several months.Police said Dyson bought a 50-pound box of those nails for $200 there last week.
Springdale Police Chief Jeff Butler said his department alone has replaced 39 tires just in the last year, adding this has been more than just a nuisance. Department spokesman Officer Keenan Riordan said police suspect Dyson's been doing this awhile, but added that they could only charge him for this occurrence.
